 Abstract

As the community renowned with the matrilineal system, Minangkabau women are highly respected. The Minangkabau women are treated distinctively. These women are not only inherited property but also their role in the society is  of great importance. However, this position is not in line with the activity of domestic violation. Quite a lot Minangkabau women become the victims of domestic violence verbally. This is assumed due to the abundance of the values of local wisdoms in Minangkabau. This writing is aimed at describing the local wisdoms in Minangkabau that can be maximized to prevent the verbal domestic violence toward Minangkabau women. The research is conducted in several locations in West Sumatera namely Padang, Tanah Datar, and Lima Puluh Kota. The data are collected by interviewing around 5 victims, 10 society members including family, and 2 community leaders per location. The data are analyzed by the  Law Number 23 of 2004 concerning the Elimination of Domestic Violence and concept or perlocutionary act proposed by [1]  and [2]. Having analyzed the data, it is found that there are at least three Minangkabau local wisdoms to prevent the domestic verbal violence in West Sumatera. They are 1) ABS-SBK (custom is based on religion, religion is based on Quran); 2) nan ampek (the four), and kato nan ampek(the four words).
